Mental Health Support

All the GPs in the practice are trained to deal with mild to moderate mental health issues and will manage the majority of cases themselves. They may suggest you make a double appointment if they feel they need more than the usual 10 minute appointment to deal with the problem. You may be asked to complete an Anxiety/Depression questionnaire to help the doctor assess the severity of your problem.

Community Mental Health Team (PCMHT)

If the GP feels counselling or more expert help is needed, you may be referred to the PCMHT which is based in Ellesmere Port. You will be able to discuss the treatment options available which include:

  • Counselling – an appointment can be offered at the surgery
  • CBT with a therapist
  • Psychotherapy with a psychologist

Consultant Psychiatrist

If the problems are more severe (as with suicidal depression or psychosis) the GP or PCMHT can refer the problem to a Consultant Psychiatrist. This is likely to be at the Countess of Chester or Wrexham Maelor hospital. Follow up for Chester patients may be in a clinic held at the surgery.

Community Psychiatric Nurses (CPNs)

CPNs are hospital based. They follow up patients with more serious mental health problems in the community and liaise closely with both Consultant Psychiatrists and the GPs.
